Insider's Guide for Women

Women are better investors but they aren't getting rich.

Women control family spending but families are falling in debt.

What is going on?

A woman’s average retirement income will be 56 percent less than a man’s.

Women lose over $600,000 in earnings, missed promotions, raises, and benefits.

Social Security is the only source of income for 25% of women retirees.

More women than men live below the poverty level.

Even when women have insurance, insurers limit some claims to 24 months, offer no benefits for pregnancy and limit claims like CFS, headaches and fibromyalgia to 24 months.

If you are young, single and no one depends on you for income or financial support, life insurance is unnecessary. But when you make a home, give care, raise children, life insurance is usually ignored.

Women are more likely to need long term care but few have the resources.

If you are tired of making excuses that let you off the hook and think it’s okay that you don’t know where to start taking control,

If you were happy to give up financial control when you got married,

If you have no idea how much your family is spending,

If you are responsible for family health-care decisions but don't know basic information about your health benefits,

If your salary has grown to top even your spouse,

It is time to grow up and take control. If you want to change the profile of women in retirement, you must learn where the spending goes. Don't assume you will have enough.

Change the way you are treated. For instance, when buying property, does the salesman stop negotiating because he thinks you should wait for your husband? The only way to change this mindset is to have more information. You will find that you will feel better. The more you feel in control of your money, the more in control you will feel of your life. That control is shared but at least when you see your wealth grow, it will inspire you to to make your assets grow more.

Female homeownership is at an all-time high--with one-fifth of residential real estate now being held by single females. Women are now the primary breadwinners in roughly one-third of U.S. households.
